A hyperlocal community discovery app with onboarding, event cards, and navigation designed for a mobile-first audience finding things to do nearby.

Local discovery apps are noisy. Users are shown everything within 10 miles and expected to filter. The result is decision fatigue and low engagement. ShakoMako needed a different model — fewer, better results based on actual behavior.
The UX was built around reducing the number of decisions. The app surfaces 5–8 highly relevant events rather than a scrollable list of 100. Onboarding captures three interest signals in under a minute, and the feed improves with each interaction.
Rather than a multi-page onboarding questionnaire, users pick three interest tiles (Food, Music, Sports, etc.) on a single screen. That's enough to generate a useful first feed. More data is gathered passively from interactions.
Each event card shows: what it is, where, when, and how far. Four pieces of information, nothing more. The visual hierarchy makes the most urgent decision (is this relevant to me?) answerable in under 2 seconds.
Three tabs: Discover, Saved, Profile. No nested navigation, no hamburger menus. Every screen is reachable in two taps from anywhere in the app.
A production mobile app with a feed, event detail pages, save functionality, and user profiles. The onboarding flow tested well — users reached a useful first feed in under 45 seconds.
